I think it depends on the people in your theatre group. Such as: Do you have a lot of guys? A lot of girls? An equal number from each gender? Are you allowed to portray drug use? Do you have a variety of races? A variety of instruments in your pit band?

Over all I'd say either "West Side Story" (a variety of races) or "Zombie Prom" (an equal number of guys/girls and a variety of instruments in your band) are cool. "The Pajama Game" (a lot of girls) can be relatively simple. If you can get away with drugs then "Hair" (a lot of men and the ability to portray drugs) is absolutely amazing.

Grease works well... it's a high school story !
West-Side Story is a tough one for the orchestra and dancers.
Sound of Music is always good... you need younger kids though.

My all-time favorites though are "South Pacific", "Oklahoma", and "The Music Man"

When was in high school (1979-1982), we did:
"Sound of Music"
"Kiss me Kate"
"How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying"
"Guys & Dolls"

"OLIVER!" It has singing, dancing, humor, intrigue, etc.; something for everyone. It will keep everyone entertained and the kids will learn a lot from it. Also, I saw a junior high school production of "Les Miserables" as well as a professional production at The Kennedy Center, and the junior high production was just as great! Some of those kids can really sing! The audience was completely captivated!

Grease is great but difficult. My school produced Fiddler on the Roof and we sold out tickets for all three nights and people said it was one of the best productions ever and it was comical. Annie is great too. If you attend a Chrisitan school try Godspell it is really a wonderful story.
