Someone has left old paperback books and magazines in the laundry room of my apartment building. I wonder if they thought people would read them while waiting for the laundry, or they just didn't want them but were too lazy to donate them to the library or thrift store because the laundry room was closer. Personally I wouldn't use the laundry as a reading room because I can just go back to my apartment. Do you think I should leave them there or take them to the thrift store, which is about 30 yards down the street?

Leave them for the other people in your building. Maybe you don't need something to do while your clothes are in cycle, but there probably others that would like something to do and they enjoy the generous donation of someone thoughtful.

I'd leave them there. Some people may stay in the laundry room while they do their laundry. That's how it was when I lived in a place with a communal laundry room. No one wanted to leave their laundry. I always had homework, but there might be someone who doesn't have anything to read. Also, the person who left them there may have with the thought of sharing them with the other residents and figured the laundry room was the best place to leave them.

If it were one book, I'd say that someone was probably reading it, set it down, and forgot about it. If it's several books and magazines, I'd say the person felt bad about throwing them away and was hoping someone would take them. I'd leave them if it's been less than a week. Otherwise, you're probably fine taking them to the thrift store.
