The last part of the word problem confuses you into thinking that $27 accounts for the payment of the TV AND the $3, but it only accounts for the cost of the TV and what is in the clerks pocket. Add to that the 3 dollars (you were tricked into thinking were accounted for already) that were given back to the 3 people = $30. Did anyone here ever take a class in logic? The dollar you _think_ is missing is in the pocket of one of the three people who bought the TV and has been the entire time. Actually ... three dollars are missing, have patience and I'll explain.
"9*3 is 27 plus the two dollars in his pocket is 29 where did the dollar go"
is the final sentence, and this is where the money comes up "missing". All the rest makes sense, but this doesn't. The only way to explain what occurred is to agree that the $27 only accounts for the cost, plus what is in the clerks pocket. Also note that by reading it carefully, you can see it counts the $2 in the clerks pocket - TWICE!
Think I'm wrong? Where is the mention of those three $1 bills in this final sentence? Umm, NOWHERE!
SIMPLY PUT - three dollars are missing from the final sentence of the word problem, each customer has one in his pocket, and NONE of you paid any attention to this. I am tempted to say that everyone who didn't get this should paypal me $3. Don't.
P.S. If you couldn't figure this out, please don't get a job working at a cash register. You will get robbed and not even know it!

when the clerk is going to give the 5 dollars back, the picture is now this: 3 people spent 25 dollars on a TV, 2 people spent 8 dollars while one spent 9. Then he gives 3 dollars back, one to each person. So now the picture is like this: 3 people spent 28 dollars on a TV. 2 spent 9 dollars and the other one spent 10. 9+9=18+10=28. So now, 28 plus the 2 the clerk got is 30 dollars.
The trick is the way the math is said. It's in wrong order, making you get confused.

No where. The clerk had their $30. The price is acually $25. Clerk takes $5 ($25 left from the original $30) and gives each $1, for a total of $3. That's $28. He pockets $2. That's $30.

The way the question is set out is the reason why there seem to be $1 missing. In reality, we can rework it and say the three people is buying a TV for $25 but they paid $9 each to make $27. The clerk kept the $2 change. Simple!

They each paid $9 dollars for the TV = $27
They received $1 each.
$27 + $3.
$27 -$2 =$25

$30 - $5 = 25$ $3 goes back and 2$ stays with the clerk. Do not add the 2$ to the 25$ but subtract it from the 27$ to properly calculate where the money went.

The Hotel Bill was eight and one third dollar per head( Twentyfive dollars divided by three)Plus they got one dollar each back. What the Bell hop kept for himself cost them two thirds of a dollar each. Total the money transaction is ten dollars. No dollar is missing in the Account .It is just an illusion

Taxes, fell on the floor, I took it to make it more fair? Inflammation they spent so long figuring out the math the money value went down.
P.S. Where did they get it?
P.P.S. Why were they sharing a TV?
P.P.P.S. I want a cheap TV to.

Bad math, as the room actually costs $8.33 each, not $9
