they like to act like bobby and whitney. they beat each other up and then have sex, its like a turn on or something

your friend is not dumb, he makes her feel as if she deserves what she is getting. the abuser is usually very skilled at this and will even go "all sweet" on her if he thinks she is going to leave him. it is all about control and his need to feel superior.
he probably can't get it up(or he can't please her in bed) so he takes it out on her. making her feel like she is the problem.
you need to help your friend get out and get away from him.
my own mother went through this for 32 years.
i asked her one day why she put up with it all those years, and she told me because she loved him.
love has nothing to do with this kind of relationship.
its all about his need to be dominant.
get her some literature on it and try to get her to a counselor.
before he ends up killing her.

because most likely she is deeply inlove and she likes to be submissive...
abusers start out sweet and they don't abuse until after the person has fell deeply inlove...
some women stay because they are scared they won't find anyone better...
