Rosemary is important because she doesn't want to be the next receiver and chooses to be released knowing what that phrase really means. In doing so, it really screws up the village because the memories she received are then released back into the village and I think were lost. But when they were released back into the village the people experienced them, which meant that they experienced alot of bad memories and experienced bad feelings. The people who live in this village are big on sameness and live a life that's very one sided with no depth, so for them to experience anything they were never exposed to was horrible. Jonas is going down the same path as Rosemary except instead of choosing to be released, he runs. The ending is ambiguous, it's left up to the person reading to draw their own conclusions. The ending to me, is like the question of 'are you and optimist or a pessimist?' Do you believe that Jonas and Gabe sled down to a new and better life or do they die? I think they lived because if they had been back in the village they came from they would have been released for not wanting to be the same like everyone else, and I'm an optimist. The author wrote the ending the way she did knowing that it didn't tell either way whether they lived or not.

Well, even lois Lowry didn't know if her ending was an optimistic one or not. But Everybody in my class thinks that Jonas and Gabe dies. Rosemary is important because she was the first receiver to kill herself. And she was the Giver's daughter
