I am going in as an adult student. I want a job like counsellor, life coach, social worker, beahvior therapist.. something like that. So I enrolled in a BA with a major in psycology... So after I take that, do I then continue on to a masters in a specific area?

Please help me understand. That is alot of school. The BA is 4 years.. but the social worker program is 4 years with no BA. To be a counsellor, you can just take 2 years of courses, no BA...

So why take the BA? I don't understand how the system works....

Before you can be a counselor or coach, you have to prove that you have somehting to offer. Who's going to ask advice from someone who can't even finish the basic professional requirement of getting a BA. I have a friend who is a very successful life coach and makes a lot of money. She has a BA from a name brand school, a MBA from a top school, ten years of professional experience in a major hospital and two years of intensive training in coaching.

She's your competition!

Life, all by itself, is a school. My grandmother used to say, "We learn something every day." It's something many of us have heard before. When we attend a formal school, it should not be only to get a degree. It should also be because we want to learn more. Some of the required courses are interesting and apply directly to the reason you're going to school. But if you want a particular job that requires a degree, then you'll also need to patiently sit through the other required subjects even if they don't seem to have anything to do with what you want to do.

Your interest shows a need to understand this. How else could you counsel someone on the proper thing to do if you, yourself aren't even sure. School is expensive. But visiting a good psychologist is also expensive. I suggest you continue school and get that BA. It will make you more noteworthy as someone who has taken the time to learn best how to help others. The list of people who know about you will grow quickly if you can be trusted to know what you're doing.

u cannot get a good job with a bachelors in psychology.. u can with social work and don't really need any further training (unless u want)..BSW make very little money but can still "do therapy" to an extent.. U can always get a BSW go to work and then if u want to get a masters.. That's what a friend of mine did... Some places will reimburse tuition for ur masters.. IF u don't want to have to get anything above a bachelors, go with social work .. Most places will not accept "counseling" degrees.. there are too many people with masters and doctorates in counseling that will get 1st option for jobs.. Have u thought of working in a mental health facility as a nurse tech.. They have a few months training and then go to work.. It's a great job..and u have a chance to help people directly though u can't "officially" counsel, u can always help.

It really depends on the type of counselor or social worker you want to be. If you want to actually be able to pay the rent in this type of field, you will probably need a masters degree. With a two year therapist or counselor degree, you will make about $8.00/hr. Unless you want to do something like occupational therapy. That is a great growing field. You could get a two year degree and make enough money to live on while still attending school. Good luck.

If you're not prepared to continue learning for the rest of your life why bother living.

We should all try to learn at least one new thing a day, is that so hard.
