it is called the "scanning" objective, since you can see a larger area and find the exact part of the specimen you will like to zoom even more and see in more detal. Remember that the closer the image, the smaller the area you will be able to look at.

No. But most people start with the lowest to get the lens centered on what they are interested in. Then you can crank it up and you won't be that far off target. Saves time.
