Private = funded by something other than your tax dollars.
Public = paid for by you and me.

When you think private university, you are thinking in terms of Harvard and Yale, as well as many other fine but lesser known schools. You are also thinking of many schools that may or may not be well known that are perfectly terrible.

"Is it true that you automatically can get into a private university?" What do you think? Yale is private. Harvard is private.

There are private colleges and universities that exist as not-for-profit educational corporations (like Harvard, Oberlin, Seattle U and Northwest) and there are those that are for profit corporations, and I will not name them.

Beware of the for-profit colleges and universities, online or in person. A for-profit institution has a fundamental conflict of interest when it comes to educating you; the profit margin trumps the student's needs every time. Some of these ARE accredited, but I wouldn't go to any of them.

Check out the link for Peterson's below - you will be able to search for local schools. Peterson's is a reliable resource - you may be able to find it in hard copy at your local library.

How much financial aid you can get is dependent on many factors, and you haven't given much information.

I've linked you below to the Seattle U admissions website. You can look there to see what they will be looking for from new students. Seattle U is affiliated with the Jesuits. Northwest is affiliated with the Assemblies of God.

If you have not done so already, you need to look at the websites of the schools that interest you and request materials from them - there will be a link to do this.

Best of luck to you.

I don't know anything about your area, but it is definitely NOT true that you can automatically get into a private university. And YES, they definitely look at your high school grades "and stuff."

* GPA, level/rigor of courses (e.g. honors, AP, etc.)
* SAT or ACT test scores; SAT Subject Tests at the most selective colleges
* Extracurricular activities and community service
* Essay
* Letters of recommendation

Good luck~
