Numerical data:
1. x+10
2. x
3. 3x - 2

First: combine the expressions to equal "43"...

x + 10 + x + 3x - 2 = 43

Sec: combine "like" terms....

x + x + 3x + 10 - 2 = 43
5x + 8 = 43

*Subtract "8" from both sides...

5x + 8 - 8 = 43 - 8
5x = 35

*Isolate "x" on one side > divide both terms by "5"...

5x/5 = 35/5
x = 7

Third: replace "7" with the x-variables in the expressions...

1. x + 10
7 + 10
= 17

2. x = 7

3. 3x - 2
3(7) - 2
21 - 2
19

Solutions: 7, 17, 19

a. 19 is the greatest number
b. 7 is the least number

5n = 43 - 8
5n = 35
n = 35 : 5
n = 7
Answer:

a + b +c = 43

a = b + 10
c = 3b -2

substituting:

b + 10 + b + 3b - 2 = 43

5b -8 = 43

5b = 35

b = 7
a = 17
c = 19

17 + 7 + 19 = 43

2007-01-26 12:34:51 · answer #5 · answered by John T 6 · 0 1

a + b + c = 43 = a + a + 10 + 3a + 28 = 5a + 38
b = a + 10
c + 2 = 3b = 3a + 30
c = 3a + 28

a = 1, b = 11, c = 31

Use this equation:

x + (x + 10) +[3 (x +10) -2] = 43

2x + 10 + (3x + 30 -2)= 43 [simplified]

5x + 38 = 43 [simplified]

5x = 5 [subracted 5 from both sides]

x = 1 [divided both sides by 5]

The numbers are 1, 11, and 31.

So the answers are..

a. 31
b. 1
