I've never really listened to the Blues but I think I would enjoy it. Could someone please point me in the direction of some of the greats?

I've seen some really great PBS speicials on the history of Blues.
I often have trouble remembering some othe the "founders" names.
So I went to Wikipedia and I cut and pasted the following for you:
".....As the recording industry grew, country blues performers like Charlie Patton, Leadbelly, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Lonnie Johnson, Son House and Blind Blake became more popular in the African American community. Jefferson was one of the few country blues performers to record widely, and may have been the first to record the slide guitar style, in which a guitar is fretted with a knife blade or the sawed-off neck of a bottle. The slide guitar became an important part of the Delta blues..."

I agree with most of the posts.. Eric is right on with Robert Johnson.. Lightning Hopkins, Howlin' Wolf, Leadbelly, Charlie Musslewhite, and then there are the many great artists of today.. Robben Ford(Ford Bros. Blues Band), Chris Cain, Volker Strifler, Larry Carlton, Debbie Davies, Garth Webber.. the list goes on.. Duane Allman, Ry Cooder both excellent slide guitarists..Bessie Smith.. geez.. I could go on... Good luck with your search.. ps..Eric Clapton helped bring blues back in the 60's as well as B.B King, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Peter Green. Freddie King and Albert King, Johnny Winter and last but surely not least, Stevie Ray Vaughn.

I love Billie Holliday- her voice is amazing, she makes me feel so much when I listen to her.
I am a rocker, so I really like Stevie Ray Vaughn, his music is amazing with all the great things he does with a guitar.... I could listen all day.
I love Muddy Waters, too.

BB King and Ray Charles are two of the most famous bluesmen, WC Handy would be considered one of the "fathers" of it.
I'll be interested to hear who other people like....

Here is a link that might help you, too. It's a list of the 100 greatest influential blues artists- check it out, http://www.digitaldreamdoor.com/pages/best_bluesinflu.html

Don't forget to check out Robert Johnson, and Blind Willie Johnson. These two Johnson's will show you what the blues is all about. One singing about the devil, the other about God. In between, they cover everything else. 'Nough said!
