I guess I should be more specific. When I'm in Xbox360 live, what is the process to invite a friend to play along with me?

If you are talking about playing online you both have to have xbox live accounts. If they are not in your friends list. Go to your friends list on your 360 and add friend,then type in their gamertag.Send them a friend request. If you want to just play with them on your xbox you must have a game that supports 2 players.

Say, "Hey, how about coming over to my house and we can play XBox360 together?".

If it is a close friend, you can just ask them to come over to play
if it is someone that you don't know that well, tell them to come over to just hang out or talk

just ask a frend nearby if they can go to ur house and then play with them.
