my faulty floor furnace was burning very dirty and omitting 6 times the legally safe level in California. During this time, it turnad all walls and ceilings black with soot. Furnace has been disconected, so no longer causing the carbon monoxide. However ,other than the visual discomfort, is the hazrd still present and should i continue to reside in until landlord cleans/removes it?

As long as its not loose and airborne it poses no immient hazard. This can be cleaned up by professionals, and is often covered by insurance. Your landlords insurance should cover the rooms, and your rental insurance should cover cleaning your possessions.
