Please someone tell me, and please dont judge. I am not a racist, but sometimes I feel discriminated against when I see "black entertainment television", or "black" colleges, and "black" college funds. I am completely not against anyone having access to great things in this country and I think everyone should have a fair chance, but it is hypocritical because I cant have a "white" college or a "white" college fund, you get the jist. I just want to know how african americans realize that this makes others, not just whites, feel discriminated against and that it is so hypocritical.

Yeah, I see where you are coming from. I think that black people in general today feel the need to make a statement. Not sure what that statement is at times, because we have our freedom now, we are equal to all Americans now, and I don't see the need to start funds, or organizations just for blacks. We all have gifts, talents, and good ideas that there shouldn't be this one club, or foundation open for one race. And I know that if there was a college fund or college for just whites, many black people jump into "That is so racist" mode, and that is just hypocritical.

Television programs are different, because they relate to how people live their lives and the life styles they know. Like BET, especially the movies, the drama is slightly different, and focuses at times on living in the ghetto, or tradition with African Amercans, how we celebrate together, you know like Italian and Puerto Rican families have ways they celebrate differenlt from others, the different foods we eat, how we celebrate religion. Like there is a some spanish channels, because many in the U.S speak Spanish more than they do English and the programs adjust to their lives. I think the different channels are interesting and can be a learning experience for others.

Historically, those colleges that were labeled black colleges or college funds were set up because blacks could not be accepted in the those types of program. Prior to civil rights movement black people either went to black universities or colleges or did not go. When the civil rights movement began blacks could not be stopped from applying for colleges or financial aid, but could be denied the same benefits as their white counterparts, which was done more often than not. Now a days their are only traditionally black colleges labels but they will accept any student, race or origin. I do not know if any college are actually labeled using the word Black, but colleges such as Tennessee State University was created for the black students when their was segregation. Now you would see more people attending than just blacks. Also you must remember the civil rights marches and laws were not that long ago, 1960's, 40 + years, some people that remember those colleges also remember why they were created. I would say in another 50 or so years this will not be the case. As far as BET, that is all about money. BET is owned by the predominately white company. I would say they leave the name as a way to entice the black consumer.

You're obviously very young and have no knowlege of the historical struggle and challanges minorities have had to face in this country. Rather than think you are being discriminated against, take some time and do some research on why BET, Black colleges, and the like are there in the first place. You need to educate yourself by "walking in another's shoes" then you can speak from understanding rather than ignorance (which leads to racism, prejudice, and discrimination). I'm sure you'd want a Black person to do the same for your family and those who share your ethnic background.

the things you just described(black college fund, black entertainment tv) were invented because at the time, the only way a black child could get into college was by other blacks giving their financial support, and BET came about because there was no television programming directed towards blacks, specifically(almost all programming then was directed at white consumers,tv watchers).. not hypocritical, but there are television networks still mainly directed towards whites, and just about any college fund in this country is designed for whites

I'm white and seeing those places doesn't really bother me. I kind of feel like every place outside those places is really biased toward whites. Don't let those places get you down. You're lucky to be a typical white girl and not have to deal with the kinds of discrimination that blacks, hispanics, Asians, Muslims, Native Americans, gays, etc. face on a daily basis. Just count your blessings.

You can't help but feel discriminated against but you have to understand even though you might not see whites have the privilege over ever one else in the country and blacks have aways been down there at the bottom in almost everything

It is generally felt that white people are the dominant race and are accepted and not discrimated against. They are the mainstream culture and so it is felt that other races need specialist services and provisions to put them on the same level as whites.

This is not necessarily true but whites do not face as much hate from other races as other races face from whites.

I see what you are saying, but honestly iam so tired of hearing some of you cry about it. Yes everyone deals with racism. I go to a public college right now and there are ALL white faternities and sororities. Deal with it... there are college funds for minorities because they are they minority, there are college funds for "white" people, Irish, Russian, Italian whatever.

I used to feel that there was a reason for this, but now I find it very confusing. My culture is the very same culture that wants everyone to be equal, yet we continue to separate ourselves by CHOICE... But when you get to the corporate world, whites do get payed more.... I duno. America needs to get its priorities straight. We don't need to always have old, white, males in office. Let's add some color so we can finally become one...

I agree and it is quite brave of you say so.

I am totally against this, because it was vice versa there would be an uproar. Why is it permitted? Because many are afraid to speak up and say something about it.

It there was a college fund just for white students...oh my...I don't want to think about it....
