Katherine Kurtz wrote a series, I think in the 80s, that is quite good. It's about the Deryni, a race that can use magic - of course, they've mostly been destroyed, but they are tied to the land and people.
Anne McCaffrey - I really enjoy the Dragonriders of Pern series. Details how some castaways that land on the planet of Pern and make their way, which includes impressing dragons which are used to fight deadly thread. This series is older as well - way before Eragon.
And there's also Piers Anthony. He has the Xanth series, which is a fantasy land full of magic that looks like Florida. The books are full of puns. The Incarnations of Immortality is interesting and starts with On a Pale Horse, the story of death and how he comes to get that job. I like the Adept series he wrote as well - sort of a parallel world where magic is part of life.

Have you tried the Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis? This is a GREAT series of books that can be enjoyed by anyone, and it reminds me of the Harry Potter books. The style is a little stilted at points, but in general, a great set of books.
