It's me again! Aside from Nyoda, I also went to Stokes State Forest Music Camp (I play trumpet). It's run by Montclair University, and is in the middle of beautiful Stokes State Forest (in New Jersey). They have fantastic, experienced counselors, ranging from college aged to middle aged. There are two symphonies, the regular and advanced, as well as a band. All string instruments are required to be in one of the symphonies (which one is based on audition the first day), and all wind instruments must be in band. Symphony is optional to wind instruments, but only accessible through audition. There is also a chorus, as well as many smaller ensembles that are formed, such as brass ensembles and such. As well as the large performance groups, campers have the option of taking private lessons (these are extra money). Music theory classes are mandatory. There is also a wonderful jazz program open to all campers. The experience can be as intense or as laid back as the camper makes it. Also, each year a musical is put on; the year I was there it was Les Miserables. In the evenings, counselors and special guests put on performances, or the entire camp gets together and plays games. In their free time, campers are expected to practice the pieces they are working on in whichever ensembles they are participating in, because at the end of the two-week program, each group performs for parents. It's really a wonderful learning experience and opportunity, where serious young musicians can meet and perform with others who are like-minded. I had a wonderful time, and learned a lot.
