the day it stoped working i did a virus scan, it came up clean!, i cleaned out the cookies, and a complete disk clean up along with a defragment. i charged the battery over night and when i went to use it the next day it wouldn't turn on, i thought it might have been the ac adapter, but it still wouldn't turn on when i bought a new one. does anyone have any idea what it would be? or if i took it in how much it would cost to fix it?

Remove any optical drives and attached USB devices. Take the battery out and hold the power button in for 10 seconds. Plug only the AC adapter in and try to power on the notebook. If it comes on the battery is probably defective. If not there maybe a problem with the mainboard.

I had that prob and did what you did
apparently with compaq sometimes you have to trick the computers brain (it thinks your battery is dead and it is in hibernation)
I went to where I bought mine and they tweaked it and told the battery that it was fully charged like it really is
whala
good luck
