When the Yugo came out it was billed as a cheap and dependable car. There were ads that showed the Ford Model T and the Volkswagen Beetle alongside the Yugo.
It was supposed to represent 3 big milestones in the history of the automotive industry. The Model T and the Beetle certainly were milestones, but the Yugo never lived up to the hype. It was a very poorly made vehicle. There was never much of an infrastructure for parts and service for them. And if you were going to own one, you would badly need easy access to parts and service!

The Yugo, made in the former Yugoslavia, was an inferior product put on the market. It was supposed to be the "cheaper" clone of an Italian car-Fiat. There were many flaws, such as engine failure, bad brakes, lousy electrical systems. Essentially they were sardine cans on wheels which could be guaranteed to break down. Surprisingly, this car is still being made and sold in Eastern Europe. There is even a Yugo Limo, go figure

i own a repair shop, and i did own one of these things back in the early 90,s,and they was real good on gas but had no quality built in to them at all, basically they were throw away cars ,when they tore up it was cheaper to junk them than repair them, but i bought and sold a few of them and made some money off of them, they was just built so cheap that they wasn't very strong at all,you had to drive them real easy or they would tear up,they were priced good though, but didn't make it because of the quality of them, people didn't like them that much either ,sales wasn't what they thought they would be on them at all, good luck,i hope this help,s.

They didn't make it because they were, to put it mildly, junk. I knew a man who had one, we used to tell him the only reason it had rear window defoggers was to keep his hands warm while he was pushing it down the street, which happened quite often.
