Over the last few days, my notebook PC (IBM X Note, 29 gb hard drive, 512 mb ram, CPU 2 ghz, Windows XP with service pack 2), has crashed four times while trying to burn mp3s to CDR. It doesn't seem to matter which programme I use (I have tried Windows Media Player and Nero with the same result). It suddenly comes up with a blue screen with white writing on it for a split second, then restarts Windows. No problems noted with anything else. Any ideas...please?

It just did the same thing while I was using Avast! to check for viruses.

First launch eventvwr.exe, the Event Viewer. Look at the System and Application groups for Red "X"'s. This may give you an idea. The computer is rebooting either because a critical error has occured or you have a hardware issue.

You can also try using Device Manager and remove the drive. Reboot the computer and let Windows redetect it. This is only a first step. If it does not resolve your problem you'll have to dig on this a little more.

Your notebook may be using too many resources.
Disable or exit from all resident programs, like the little icons on your start menu.
You can also defrag your hard drive to make things run faster - that helps with everything you do on the computer.

Best bet would be trying to reinstall the CD drive's driver files. I had a similar problem and that helped me.

Make sure any CD burning software or drivers that came with the CD are disabled and then reinstall them.

I think you need more RAM to be able to burn the CD, I have 1gb an I am considering going up to 2gb
