There are actually two answers: the first for amniotic fluid is amniocentesis which is done at a later stage in the pregnancy, another newer test which can be done much earlier, as early as 10 weeks, and pulls fluid directly from the placenta is a CVS or Chorionic Villus Sampling. The CVS is also a more accurate test than an amnio.

Amniocentesis. They use an ultrasound machine to locate the position of the baby en-utero, then they take a long needled syringe and insert it through the abdomen withdrawing some of the amniotic fluid. They did it to me because I was 34 when I had my last child to test for Down Syndrome.
