A family member had bought one for me since I have allergies/skin conditions and wonder how effective these things really work.

I have a halite salt lamp and it worked wonders for my asthma, when heated it purifies the air and adds moisture to the atmostphere. you have to be careful though as if they are exposed to cold moisture (eg DONT PUT IT ON A WINDOWSILL) they produce salt and it makes a real mess. They do work and the look lovely too!

The benefits of the lamps are both in purifying the air and as well as a decorative piece. It is explained at http://www.himalayansalt.info/himalayan_salt_lamps.html
Himalayan salt is claimed to be unpolluted, pure and natural because it comes from the million year old mountains.

They are supposed to release negative ions in the atmosphere.

Personally I think they are hooey for the benefits because I can feel the negitive ions from an ionizer; but nothing from the lamps.

If you like them and want to get one because they are beautiful; be my guest; just don;t expect much from them.

My Mom got me one for Christmas. I keep it on all the time. To be honest with you, I can't tell that it does anything for my health. It is nice to look at when it is nightime, but that is about it. I guess if somebody had allergies or something it might be helpful to them. They are kinda pricey also.

Aside from any aesthetic benefits, it's all a load of hooey.
