I dont smile, i noticed that it only provokes them more. And im not mean back, or at least i try my best not to be. I just ignore them. And i dont honestly know if im a nice person but whatever they say about me..i dont let it change my opinion of me..nice or otherwise.

Mean? What's this, sixth grade? I don't take any crap. If they are going to try and dish it out, they better be able to take it in return. Yes I'm a nice person, will never allow anyone to walk all over me.

depends on the person.
if the person is someone i really care about, i think id be surprised for a moment and do the whole uncomfortable smiley thing and then walk away. then berate myself for not being more agressive.
if the person is someone i dont care about at all, i'd exchange some insults.

I used to try that tactic with my husbands aunt - anytime she could get a dig in at me, she would. Eventually, I told my husband I was going to be in the house when she was coming, I made him write the Xmas cards etc. As he hadn't seen her for about six years before I encouraged him to contact her - I think she knew she was in danger of losing him again. Just as I was prepared to be as bigger ***** back at her - she turned pleasant towards me...................
