Well, as for the kinds of plants.... I would go talk to the nursery about that, see what does GREAT in your area. Thats the best advice I can give you about the plants. Next, as for fish, Koi would be great, Just as long as your pond will be at least 2 feet deep, and at least twice as big as your bath tub. A good rule of thumb my dad taught me. Also, I wouldnt place any pebbles on the bottom, since after some time you wont really see the bottom.

You don't say if the pond is natural or a liner. Ponds need either gravel or mud on the bottom if its a liner. Nice looking container plants are easy to look after and you can get a lot of different designs now. They can really brighten up the pond area. A bushy type tree would give good shade and not need a lot of care either but if its a natural pond with no liner, it can lower the water level in the pond as it gets bigger.
Gold fish make good pond fish. I live farther north where it freezes in winter but during the summer I have a turtle and 2 catfish in my pond.

You can buy fresh water pond kits in all kind of sizes. The pond itself is a rubber sheet to keep the water in and comes with a pump so that you can create a stream. All you need is to dig a hole in the ground to the size and depth to your plan, add a slope for the stream and put rocks and stones all around to make it natural. I would plant relatively thick, tall tropical plants around the pond to give it shade. Nothing is worse than algae growth aided by full sun.

go to Home Depot or Lowe's and get one of their books about pond building and design, they have good advice and many pictures and designs...you can keep goldfish or koi in the pond altho the koi will require a much larger pond, don't put rocks on the bottom of the pond, it will be easier to keep clean, don't build your pond where it will get full sun - it will make your water ugly green all the time, you can also get nice water garden plants from both of those stores or from your local pet shops, some of my favorite plants are native to the area I live in, look around where you live, good luck
