That depends on exactly what you consider to be part of the 'inventing'.
I mean, obviously paper was invented thousands of years ago, but paper along does not a post-it make. The glue used on post-its was invented in 1968 (by Spencer Silver of the 3M company), but at the time it was considered a failure - he was looking for a strong glue and came up with a very weak one instead.
The person who put the pieces together was Arthur Fry, another employee of the 3M company. He was purportedly looking for a way to stick small notes to his hymnal in a way that wouldn't permanently secure them to the paper, and because of his association with 3M and awareness of their research, put two and two together, so to speak. This was in 1974.
It took a bit of experimentation to produce and market the final product, which was first commercially available in 1980. It was a massive hit. And still for the most part is!

Post-Its were actually invented 5 months before most people think.
It's just that the bloke who posted it forgot to put the address on the front so it lay in the post office for ages.

The adhesive was discovered in 1970, but weren't distrubuted by 3M till 1980. Spencer Silver discovered the adhesive, but Arthur Fry created the overall Post-it.
