Hi David,
Your question is very well-asked and thoughtful. Many people drink alcohol for socialising or to escape their sorrows.
On a more sobering thought, my father passed away of pancreas infection due to 60 years of drinking alcohol. To me, yes, alcohol is a glorified and addictive poison.
However, Chinese have medicinal wine that is supposed to be beneficial to health. It is made of many herbs.
Alcohol, in general, can cause brain damage when consumed over a long period. It causes one to do and say silly things.
Personally, I stay away from alcohol, even red wine. I read the label on the red wine and they don't even reveal the ingredients in them. The chemicals, presumably the preservatives in them, are toxic.
Cheers! (pardon me for the pun)

Yes it absolutely is. Medically speaking, your body treats it as a toxin to be flushed. In fact, the reason you get intoxicated is bc your brain is literally strangulated for oxygen by binder molecules in ethanol. And of course your liver isn't loving it either. It has to work 2x as hard to filter and remove the toxic substances.
That scary piece said, small and infrequent drinking never killed anyone and it has many social bonding qualities that balance out, provided you know where to draw the line.

UMMM, Yes. People who spend their time in bars and getting wasted and being ignoramuses, well, I just feel sad sad for them. Waste of time, waste of money, waste of brain cells and in some cases you lose loved ones over it. You know why people get "hungover"? Because they poisoned their mind and body the day before! It's actually really disgusting if you think about it.

you betcha. And society does nothing in spreading this message across. Rather kids grow up with the message that it is 'cool' to drink

there are benefits of limited consumption of alcohol. Red wines are an example of this.

It all depends on moderation.
A glass of wine at dinner is good for health.
