The minimum that my floor lamp takes is 50 watts. It can also take 100/150 watts. Would this affect the lifetime of my new 42 watt CFL?

Short Answer = Yes, the 50/100/150 style of lamp has four contacts as does the lamp holder 1 common 3 hots, 1 for each wattage, the new cfl will make contact with at least 1 of the hots and thats all you need, but dont be alarmed if you have to turn the knob a few time to get the right one. Remember voltage is voltage and a lower wattage cant hurt in this situation.

Yes, you just won't get to change the light levels 50-100-150, it will stay the same brightness. It should not effect the life of the bulb.
