Report: Iran almost ready to launch spy satellite into space

Iran has converted a 30-ton ballistic missile into a satellite launch vehicle that will soon be used to send a reconaissance satellite into space, a move that could have wide security implications, Aviation Week & Space Technology magazine reported on its Web site on Thursday.

Alaeddin Boroujerdi, the chairman of the Iranian parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, spoke about the upcoming launch to religious students and clerics in Qom, the industry trade publication said.

The launcher is a version of the Shahab-3 missile that has a range of 800 to 1,000 miles (1,285-1,600 kilometers), the magazine said. A missile of its kind could reach Saudi Arabia and as far west as Turkey, the report said.
Iran's satellite launch will likely increase Western concern over its strategic capabilities.

It's too bad we don't have an Administration that knows how to communicate and be trusted. It is unfortunate we don't have more intelligent leadership.

If we must be concerned, it's more sensible to be concerned about Pakistan. A military dictatorship, Pakistan still harbours Taliban fighters -- and has nukes.

Iran, unlike its neighbours, has no nukes. And the international atomic inspection agency says Iran is enriching uranium only to 4% for its electricity-supply reactors -- reactors the U.S. helped build ages ago. (Nukes need enriching to 95%.)

Rocket progress is inevitable. Any country with security concerns about Iran must understand that. You'd think that such countries would do more to build good relations with Iran. But then again, those same countries -- and idealogues like the U.S.'s Bush and Canada's Stephen Harper -- also thought Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction.

We could easily shoot it down if the time came. It's not like Iran is some Superpower threat that can destroy our nation in one foul swoop, remember we have the technology years ahead of them, heck centuries ahead of them, and we could lay ruin to their country in a heartbeat if we wanted to. To me, the Iranians should be the ones nervous. Iran can push their luck all they want but if they overstep the line, then they'll find themselves in worst shape then the time they fought the war with Iraq.

I think being drawn into a war with Iran is a distinct possibility, with no possible way of winning short of nuking them.
Conventional attack by ground forces would be suicidal.
Something has to be done real fast.
As you say they are becoming more and more of a global threat with all the rapid progress in all fields.

There are people in the USA that will pay NO ATTENTION to anything Iran does until they see a Mushroom cloud over Israel or a US city. Then they will blame GWB for doing Nothing.

"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself", those words were spoken by President Roosevelt many years ago and it applies now. We need to be talking with Iran, not rattling swords like this administration is doing. I think we need to face this head on and not by refusing to meet face to face.

We don't really know where they stand until they actually demonstrate their technological prowess. That is true both for missiles & nukes. The 1st demonstration of their nuke capability may be over Jerusalem. That's why it is imperative to destroy their nuke capabilities NOW.

Any world leader that attends a conference in which he declares the Holocaust a myth . . . . is a country we should all be concerned about.
