there are shuttle buses from the casinos in niagara falls to toronto. they are inexpensive and i am sure you can find out by asking your hotel. greyhound also has regular buses from toronto to niagara falls. i am sure your hotel will have info on that for you. if you plan to stay over night in toronto, i do recommend a car as it is a very easy drive. one straight highway from niagara to toronto. having a car makes it wasier for you to see the falls at your own pace and for you to stop off in other areas along the way such as niagara-on-the-lake. it is a very quaint town known for its wineries and shaw theatre festival. once in toronto, you can leave the car at the hotel and just walk o take transit. toronto is worth more than one day as it has so much to do.

Niagara Falls NY and Niagara Falls Ont. are, as you would expect, right across the river from each other. You can walk across the bridge from one to the other (and should, it's got a great view.) From California, I'd suggest flying into Buffalo. It's close, it's got lots of flights, although no non-stops from the west coast, and there are low-fare airlines. You can rent a car and be at the Falls in less than 1/2 hr. Or you can fly non-stop to Toronto, rent a car there and it's about 1 1/4 hrs to the Falls. If you don't want to drive, there are limos from both airports. Even if you fly to Buffalo, bring your passport or birth certificate, because you'll want to visit both sides of the falls.

Yes, you can take the train. VIA Rail operates a train that goes from Toronto to Niagara Falls and then on to NYC, through Buffalo. Here is the link: http://www.viarail.ca/trains/en_trai_onta_toni.html
