You can use the same line...you just have to unplug your phone and plug in the fax when you need to send or receive one...kind of a pain.

You can just keep the fax machine near the phone, and don't set it to auto answer. Then if you answer the phone and hear fax tones, you just hit "start" on the fax machine and hang up.
It's best to plug your phone into the second port in the back of the fax machine. That way you won't have to worry about picking up the phone and interrupting a fax.

You do not need a second line to run your fax machine. You just simply hook up a phone line from you wall outlet to the machine, do your faxing and then disconnect, or you can set up your fax machine to recognize incoming faxes and only answer the phone after a certain amount of rings. Check out your owners manual for details.

If you want the fax hooked up all the time, you would need a separate line. However, certain machines have a function where the fax picks up after a certain amount of rings, or recognizes another fax machine. You only need your original phone line for one of these machines. I have an HP "All in One" that does that.

A FAX machine will operate on a single line. Program your FAX to respond after four rings and your answering machine after 6.

You can use your own residential line (for a few faxes here and there) but if you find that your using it often or find it a pain answering while it's a fax call, I would suggest you get a fax line.

They run off your phone line, just don't pick up the phone or use the phone when someone's faxing: you may hear ringing

You need a single line jack connected to your 3rd line. It's easy to hook up, or you can find some high school kid who'll do it for a few bucks. (If it takes 15 minutes, including cleaning up, he's working too slowly.)
