I have taken off all the programs I no longer use, shut off as many programs as I can that run in the background, done a disk clean up, spyware scan and a virus scan - the computer is clean, but still running slowly. Any suggestions?

Try Webroot Window Washer; this program gets rid of all spyware, adware, phishing, executable malicious software. Are you on DSL, Cable or land line? Your connection speed and processor have a lot to do with how fast the computer is. Mine is running at 4.0 ghz with @ 100.0 Mbps cable connection and a Pentium 4. Do you have all the Yahoo tool bars on your internet screen? This will also slow down your processor. You might want to back up all your important files and do a system restore from a point in time when the PC was running fast. You might also have been hijacked by another user that is using your processor to run dial up programs or e-mail scams. There are other things besides viruses and spyware that will slow down a computer.

Could be a lot of things. From a bad hard drive to software error. First, is the hard drive making any sounds that it wasn't before? If not, log in on safe mode with networking (F8 on boot) and go to google and search the word "housecall", the first site listed will be a trendmicro site that will run a complete scan, registry, virus, spyware and all. This could could do it. Before logging off, AVG has a new spyware scanner that's free to download.

Your spy ware or anti-virus could have missed something, especially so if it is an old unupdated copy. Spybot is a good one, and Grisoft's AVG is an excellent anti-virus software. Windows has a bad habit of not releasing RAM where the information written to it is no longer needed, but is still there. A third party memory manager might help. Your RAM speed, and the amount of RAM might be issues that you need to consider. What programs are you now trying to run, and what is your CPU capable of? These could also be issues to consider.

Try to clean out your temporary Internet files and maybe upgrade your HDD (because a almost full HDD can act slow and make the computer slow), or upgrade your memory.

Did you try deleting any and/or all e-mails you don't need to keep. Empty any files that you don't need and empty the recycle bin? All of this stuff takes up space. Also try doing a power cycle. Shut off the computer and unplug everything. Wait a few minutes then plug everything back in and reboot. This works for me sometimes.
