Are they better than paper planners/organizers that you can buy for about $5.

If your job requires taking notes and having appointments then this might be helpful. PDA's are very expensive ($150-$500) but can help if you are a busy person. The keys on the screen are very complicated to use if taking notes so if taking notes you might also want to purchase a IR(infrared recieving) keyboard. They fold and store and are very easy to use. If you just have a few things going on every now and then using pencil and paper would be a better idea. Good luck deciding!

In all honesty, it's a silly purchase. It's more of a status symbol,.. something to say "Hey, I'm somebody important with a lot going on!" In reality, you'll most likely use it for a couple weeks and then start forgetting it at home/work, and then before you know it, you've stashed it away in a drawer somewhere.
If you've got a schedule that's that busy and you are extremely forgetful, then I'd suggest one,.. but then you'd forget it anyways if you're that bad. Seriously though, stick with a notepad or use the computer at work to remind you of things while you're there. That leaves you with only about 5 hours a day where you're not at work or sleeping that you have to remember things.
Save the money and buy your significant other something nice, you'll get much more out of that!

not really, i got one as agift and i never use it. It takes to long to get it out and hit all the little keys, i find it much faster to just jot something down on a piece of paper or my planner...and cheaper

Ehh I'd stick with paper if $5 is your budget. I have a $400 that is useful if I keep it up to date, but writing with paper is still faster.

If you are on the road a lot it is a life saver, if not then it's a waste of time and money. HP makes a good little unit.
