Fred, of course, is a fish. However, if you want to really have some fun with this one, try it something like this:
You walk into a room. In this room, on the floor, Romeo and Juliet lie dead. Also on the floor there is water, and broken glass. What happened?
Of course, you can use any names, but I like Shakespeare. By asking what happened rather than what is 'fred' or 'romeo', you engage your audience and play out the drama a bit. It also prevents you from giving away a major clue. ("what" is fred immediately tells your listener that Fred is not human. "What happened?" avoids this without you unfairly misleading the listener)
