stretch marks are caused when the skin gets over stretched in places such as the waist and breasts. the thing is it really can't be hereditary for the simple fact that there are things one can do to prevent them. vitamin e oil, theres a lotion with coco, and shea butter vitamin e and a few other things, found out it helps tried it on my wife who is pregnant and the marks a fading and very few are showing. Thing is it ain't just women, men get them to look at some body builders, mainly around the main joints shoulders and such and you can find them there to.

I've never heard it's hereditary.

I used cocoa butter on my stomach daily when I was pregnant and I don't have any stretch marks there (I gained 50lbs during my pregnancy!). I DID however get them on my breasts and upper thighs... nobody TOLD me THOSE were getting bigger too!! LOL

The hot baths could have helped because it might have helped the skin to stretch better... although I believe hot baths and saunas are not great for pregnant ladies (raises the body temperature to dangerous levels for the baby).

My mother, grandmother, and aunt didn't get stretch marks but I sure did!! Unfortunately, there isn't really anything to do to prevent them. The lotions do not work b/c it is the deepest layer of skin that forms them. Not gaining too much weight helps.

Sometimes they are hereditary, not always.
