2. What is the difference between a solvent and a solute?

Thanks a lot, Nick and Twin Peak, both of your answers have really helped. I don't know which one of your answers I will choose as best answer, so I will leave that up to the voters...But if I do have to choose one, I'll see which one, but both of them were really good!

1) muddy water. the dirt and water will separate, not mix evenly.
2) solvent dissolves things, like water. solute gets dissolved, like salt
3) no the cereal and milk do not evenly disperse. the cereal does not dissolve, and they can be easily separated. this is a mixture.

1. Muddy tank (not a solution)
2. A solvent is a fluid phase (liquid, gas, or plasma) that dissolves a solid, liquid, or gaseous solute, resulting in a solution. The most common solvent in everyday life is water. Most other commonly-used solvents are organic (carbon-containing) chemicals. A solute is the substance within the solution
3. No, a good example for a solution would be adding sugar to water or milk (the sugar dissolves in the water). The cereal is still solid and maintains its shape and form (to an extent).

Good luck,
