AMEN! If you are 6 years old and weigh about 50 pounds, hot pink, lime green, day glo orange and all of the other neon colors look great. If you are 40 and weigh ??? , they just make you look like an overgrown popsicle. I have seen the trends go to more and more crystals, bright colors, colored hats ( popular in the 70's and they are back), pants with inserts in the legs of a contrasting color, and anything else that screams LOOK AT ALL MY BLING!. I combat this by wearing a plain solid colored western shirt, black hat and jeans, and black chaps. I have had judges tell me that I stood out, because I was not blinding them with color and crystals. But horse people (and I have done this myself), follow any trend of whoever is winning. If the winning horse's rider had a neon green mohawk, next show, everyone else would to. And that nice cotton shirt is a lot cooler than the 15lb show shirts used to wear.

I don't do the regular "western shows" where you have the bright patterns and neon colors. I do cutting and reining events where they basically have you wear a uniform of nice black or khaki pants with a button up oxford shirt- you'd be crazy to wear neon and bright patterns anyways because NCHA and NRHA are about the horses ability and not your ability to show your horse.
But I've seen some really pretty western outfits that are nice and subtle but still make you stand out. IN my opinion- you don't see neon pink and orange cows so don't wear died leather- if you're going to wear leather chaps or pants- keep to blacks and tans.

Generally, and no offense judges really do sometimes judge by what your wearing not the horse. I have seen the best horse get last because of the persons old fashioned clothes anyway. also the no offense part is who cares about what you wear the horses are the most wonderful and amazing part.

i happen to agree since i run games i think it should not be about fashion atleast i cancompete and win becasue i know i am that good and not becasue my parents are the richest i have the best stuff and the best training i think shows should be judged with who is the best and not who has the most money but hey that is just me i like knowing why i won not knowing i won because of the money or what breed my horse is

Yeah I think the neon colors are ugly. They are cute for kids, but I would never wear them. I prefer the traditional colored show clothes, with a little sparkle to catch the judges eye. I wear solid black with rhinestones, it looks really good and makes my palomino really stand out!

Well that is a crappy judge... unless she was in showmanship.... cuz it shouldn't be based on clothes unless it is a showmanship class and that is only because they are judging you and how you show your horse not so much what your horse looks like..... I kinda like the neon colors but not too much of it..... i like the black with rhinestones too!!!

That is why horse (and all animal) shows are ridiculous. Just enjoy riding and taking care of your horses. Forget trying to show off for everyone else.
Real cowboys don't care if you are wearing the "latest style".

Believe it or not--flashy and showy sometimes wins. My cousin was at a show last year and the judge made the comment she was going to place her first because of her outfit. It also catches the judges attention if it is bright or shiny.

I still ride in my old plaid shirt and genes. I haven't kept up with the latest trend. Maybe I should be a little bit more observant.
