I have 2 internal HDD's one for windpws XP and programs, the other was for storing mp3s. I am using the pc as a jukebox with touch screen interface. I filled the 2nd hdd as I am using an older motherboard that cannot see anything biger than 30GB. I am now storing all my music on an external 320GB drive.

At present the 2nd drive is empty. What I would like to know is would having all other programs except XP on the 2nd drive improve/hinder performance. Is there any use for this 2nd drive now or should I just remove it?

Move your Swap file to the 2nd drive (No OS) will improve your PC performance. You may want to move the non OS drive (2nd drive) to a different channel. Set it as a master drive like the main drive but on a different channel/cable. You will see some improvement with this setup.

Well, that depends on the access speed. If the access speed of the 2nd drive is faster than the other drive(s), it should improve performance at loading. If that's not the case, then you can certainly use the second drive for RAM. Go to windows help and search "page file"

Personally I would use the 2nd drive for backing up important files, that way if your main drive goes down and you have to reinstall windows on a new one you'll still have the stuff that matters.

I tried putting installed programs on a 2nd HD and found nothing but problems. I suggest keeping the 2nd HD to store downloaded files before moving them to the external drive.
