I was always taught that reversed cards had specifically different (yet along the same lines) meanings to the upright meaning. I've been reading tarot for almost 10 years now and this has always been the case in the circles I move in. On the older Deck I use which based on an old Celtic version of tarot the cards actually have an "upright" and "reversed" picture on them for easier translation, considering they are based on a much older deck than the usual Raider Waite that I use I imagine that this is quite an old part of tarot reading. I've never heard of it making more money?! But then I personally do not read for payment.

reversed meanings have been part of the Tarot since they have been used. The upright usually indicate a positive application of the card, when reversed this indicates the opposite but not necessarily a evil thing or meaning

It depends what spread you use, some do have reversed meanings ... ... Tarot readings should always be in the positive not the negative ... ... a Tarot reading is a guide and nothing more ... .. ...

Unfortunately, I think what confuses some when it comes to this term is literally what are they talking about when they say upright or reversed...what position does this indicate when it's dealt out, what are you literally looking at when looking at the card? Reverend Soleil answered best, it's the actual position of the card when it's dealt. Is it face down (reversed), so that you must turn it over to see the card, or face up (upright) and you do not need to turn it over?

It depends on who you ask. The reverse meanings can give you a better look at the opposite side of the coin so to speak. Not everything all roses and puppy dogs.

I did a tarot reading with baseball cards once.
The Red Sox won and five people died.
