Plecos will get very large. They are probably the worst types of algae eating fish you can get due to their largeness. You would need maybe a 300 gallon if you wanted one in a community tank. Algae eaters and another type of sucker fish that i don't really know how to spell or much of its name (it's something like occtinulus...i don't know i know it begins with oc. It grows to be about 3 inches max) They will both be much smaler then the common pleco. The smallest pleco you can get is the dwarf clown pleco which will reach around 6 inches at full size. If you have a somewhat smaller tank 5-20 gallons i would get one or more shrimp or the algae eater which name i cannot remember.if you have a 30-50 you could probably get a dwarf clown pleco or algae eater. 100+ is probably the best size for the common pleco.

As an adult, it should have a tank of at least 55 gallon (http://www.fishlore.com/Profiles-Pleco.htm). Of course, the actual size of the tank needed will depend on the total number of plecos and other fish you plan to keep. At 18" as an adult, a pleco may have a hard time turning around in a 55!

I had a 12" pleco in a 10 gallon tank. He wansn't very comfortable... but he survived until i bought him a 29 gallon. it took him about 4 years to get that big in the 10 gal.

120, minimum, period. They are a large, large fish and they grow very quickly. Also of note, unlike other algae eaters, common plec's love to free swim, and look very impressive gliding across a large tank.

I have a 300 litre tank and have around 10 plecs in there, size range from about 2" up to 7". They live happily together and all bundle in one plant pot "cave" even though there are 4 available!!

People say they need a ton of room but thats just when they get to be full size. I would say a good amount would be 2 gallons an inch when they are small, unless ur tank is like 5 gallons then I wouldnt get one.

They get a few feet long. I wouldn't keep them in under 300 gallons at the bare minimum. I think it should be illegal to sell these fish to the general public.
