Since I live in Texas, I can't tell you where in Whittier, California (wherever that is) you can learn how to drive manual shift, but I'm sure someone knows how, if you just ask around, and anyone can teach you. Trust me in that it's so incredibly simple you won't believe why more people don't do it. I would drive ONLY manual shift till I lost my right leg in a railroad accident, so now I'm required to drive automatic. What a drag. But I taught my son how, or maybe my wife did, and as rough as he was in the beginning, mostly due to his youthful impatience, he did finally learn to be smoothe about it. Now he insists his manual transmission car is faster than my automatic version of the same car. I won't race him, but, maybe I'd win, if he didn't run me off the road. You'll learn, and it will be SSSOOOOOOO easy. I usually try to tell people to imagine you're on one of those small paddle boats you find on some small recreational lakes that you can rent by the hour or so. On them, as you push one foot forward, the other one automatically comes back to you, simply by the way the pedals are designed. Well, the very same thing is what has to happen as you use the clutch and the gas pedal. As you move one of them forward, the other one has to come back to you, or you'll stall or burn your clutch. It's a little rough in the beginning as you learn, but don't panic. It's just like dancing. You may feel awkward at first, but you'll glide into it so easy that you'll never remember when you first began "knowing how" to drive a manual transmission. Since I can no longer drive manual transmission due to my accident 6 years ago, you drive it for me, and drive good. I enjoy driving a standard transmission, and I'll love going on a ride with you in your car. God Bless you.

Who really give's a rat's backside? If you're going to rent cars in Europe or other places on the lower end, you need to know how to drive one. I usually get an auto because if you're in traffic, it's easier on the legs. It doesn't take a genius to drive a stick (which if you're being literal, has always been a shift rod up through the floor). It's never been a guy thing, just one of those things that some guys think is a guy thing. We all used to sit around and talk about this crap as if it mattered. It doesn't. I figured this out a long time ago when I was drag racing a couple of cars. One was a stocker injected Chev with a three speed. ou were always replaced clutch plates with busted springs, the whole clutch, link parks, you name it. Under stress the transmissions had (and did for many years) a nasty habit of breaking the brazing on a synch ring. The good news was in theory it saved the transmission. The bad news was that you had to tear the transmission out and replace the synch ring. If that weren't bad enough you had to stay within the stock rules, even loosely enforced. The gasser on the other hand was no holds barred flyer. The stupidest thing you can do is use a manually shifted transmission. I saw people try to do four speed close ratios. I tried that and was so burned out on it that I went for what was called a hydrostick, old fashioned now, but a beefed up hydromatic that could handle 800 horsepower. No clutch. No trouble. Overhaul occasionally. What you wanted to do was go fast, not show off your shifting skills. And if you want to try a real guy thing, trying one of the old school dragsters with an in-out box. Keep the slicks smoking and the power up. No great changes and try to get through the traps at 8000 rpm. You ever seen a Nascar race where you even notice someone doing a guy thing about shifting gears. That's about going fast. And if you want to drive a real guy car, try one of those sports cars with a clutchless manual transmission. You can set it to shift automatically or ride the paddles. The whole idea is to not let the transmission get in the way of driving. On the other hand, if you're driving a beat up Honda with a four cylinder without mods, maybe that manual transmission not only is a guy thing, but sorta necessary to eke out those few horsepower. Maybe try the new vette and about whether you need a manual shift to be a manly guy. By the way, you notice how women drivers are dominating all sorts of what used to be "guy" racing, like drag racing, etc. I'd bet you they never worry about what looks like a guy thing -- they just kick your ***.

If your a girl, get a job as a valet. Really, I taught no less than 100 ladies how do drive stick as they started out. You get a wide range of cars, and they are all new and have good clutches. Dont worry ...they wont let you become embarressed, I used to let them practice in the back of the lots away from customers , till they had some confidence. And you get PAID for it.......GONZO
