Yes you do. Soundproofing materials are very expensive. The cones in the eggcrates break up the soundwaves, therefore reducing feedback and echo.
...and don't record loudly. use only enough volume to max your meters. The loudly comes later in the mixdown.

not egg cartons...eggcrate foam, available at local home depots and stores like that. it looks just like soundproofing foam and work the same! it just isnt a pretty color! if you arent padding the enitre room make sure the pads arent directly across from each other nor should they be level with each other.

Sheets of Foam. remember that a sound proof room has a 12' wall. and that most house walls are 4'.
