I bought a guinea pig 5 days ago and he has a cage and all his stuff in it, but he didn't have a hiding place, so I got a box and cut a hole in it. he liked in and everything but now he's barely coming out of it, when I take it out he starts eating and drinking. What should I do? Take the box out for good? Or leave it? Also when I take him out of the cage and let him go on the floor he looks fo a place to hide. Is that normal? I'm really concerned, so plase help me. Thanks!

He just feel insecure. Try getting in touch with him-hold him for a while everyday and put him in playpen to relieve stress. You can get a new hiding box that has different style(if you had box shaped hiding place, use igloo shapes). It is normal but if the guinea pigs really knows who you are for sure, I am pretty sure that it will start getting out of the cage more often. Remember, you just got him and your guinea pigs needs to take time knowing you. Trust me I have 2 guinea pigs and both of them did the same thing.Good luck

I work at an animal shelter and all of our small animals have a hiding place. It seems to give them great comfort. I wouldn't take his box away. He will eat and drink with his box in his cage. A couple of things to keep in mind are that they should not be kept on cedar wood chips and the majority of their diet should be hay. As for him hiding when he is let free is probably due to him being afraid. I'm sure with some slow socializing he will get more comfortable. good luck.

What he's doing is totally normal - he's still unsecure in his new home. Leave the box for him, it gives him a safe, warm place to go when he's feeling scared. He will start to come out and play once he's used to you. He will definently look for a place to hide when he's out of the cage - look at the world from his size and you'd seem like a monster, your couch a mountain, etc. Give him time to get used to you & his surroundings and you will have a happy, friendly guinea!
Good Luck!

This is the survival instinct of the guinea pig, when they are in unfamiliar territory they have to hide from predators.
Your guinea should come out when it gets more comfortable with you.
Don't worry it'll get more adventurous as it learns the new environment.

Yeah, that's normal, my guinea almost never came out of his box, so I took it out. You can if you want to, I don't see a problem with that, but don't worry, what he's doing is totally normal.

when i got my guinea pig i would take away her house during the day time, and put it back in at night. It worked out well, and she is very social.

You can get "pigloos" from certain pet stores which is better then a cardboard box that they might chew! I think it'd be better if you kept the box or pigloo out during the day and just put it in at night. Otherwise they won't come out and won't get exercise.

he has to adjust to his new home. you are over stimulating him.
give him a fiew days to adjust. he will come out to eat and drink if it is quiet and dark.
don't worry. he will get over his shyness and he will not stay in the box and starve to death
