My kneecaps can move from side to side easily (and pretty far from the normal kneecap position), and I read that that is one of the symptons of a dislocated knee...What's wrong here?

It is very serious. It could be a dislocated patella, but sounds more like a bad sprain. The kneecap is held on by a strong tendon and if you have damaged that, it could be causing the pain. Get to A&E or ER depending on where you are and get it checked out. Most long term injuries occur when not treated quickly enough

No i doubt your kneecap is dislocated! my kneecap can do that 2. It would be dislocated if u can move it up about 5 in. and down. Side 2 side has nothing 2 do with a dislocation! does it hurt? u couldn't walk on it if it was dislocated!

the patella (kneecap) is designed to be able to move from side to side, especially when the quad muscles are not contracting. If it is not painful, do not put much thought into it because it is most likely normal. If it is painful, you should see a physician. A dislocated knee would not allow you to move your knee normally and be EXTREMELY painful.

The patella (knee cap) has no articulation. It's not connected to any other bone, so it can't be dislocated. If your knee joint was dislocated you wouldn't be able to walk properly. Sounds like a 'Floating Knee Cap'. Have it checked if it gives you pain.
