Metallica by a mile... even St Anger is better than Van Halen

This comparison is out of time my dear friend. Metallica is a Thrash, Heavy Metal, Speed Metal and few times Hard Rock band such as Slayer, Anthrax, Sepultura, Machine Head, Coroner, Death, Dio, Danzig, King Diamond, Mercyful Fate, Metal Church, Overkill, Voivod, Death Angel, Queensrÿche, Cancer, Corrosion of Conformity, White Zombie, Rollins Band, Melvins or Soundgarden.
Van Halen is a Hard Rock, Pop/Rock, Arena Rock, Album Rock
Pop-Metal band that could have recorded some tracks sounding similar to Heavy Metal.
Van Halen's similarity with other groups are Aerosmith, Boston, Queen, Dokken, Def Leppard, Living Colour, Loudness, Autograph,Gary Hoey, Michael Angelo, Warrant, Poison, Quiet Riot, UFO, Thin Lizzy, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Rush, Spinal Tap, Foreigner and even The Cars.
In conclusion: both are fine bands in their respective rock styles.

It's either early Metallica or early Van Halen, for me! And between them, it's going to be Metallica, hands down! L8er

I'm sure you'll get answers on both sides, but it's totally a matter of opinion.
I happen to prefer Metallica, but that doesn't mean I don't also like Van Halen.

Both are really good, tough choice, but I like Metallica. Eddie Van Halen pioneered some great guitar, tho.

metallica. no question about it. way more popular and better music. not saying that van halen is bad. but we're talking about metallica here, the biggest band in rock history.
