OMG they eat spaghetti with anchovy sauce? That is vile. Despicable. My God. Only rigafurlitortizoni should be eaten with anchovy sauce.

I tend to like different shapes for different types of sauces as well, sometimes I am in the mood for angel-hair with marinara sauce, sometimes rigatoni with meat sauce, it does make a difference to me, and on a practical level certain pastas may "hold" certain sauces better because of their shape. Also, rigatoni and ziti are a lot easier to eat at times than traditional spaghetti. Further, certain pastas of different shapes and colors look better when served while entertaining than others. I think its fun and good variety, everything is a little silly but that is what makes life great. :-)

Certain shapes and textures of pasta hold certain types of sauces better. Example:
Fettucine is good with alfredo because the pasta is heavy and smooth, but the sauce is thick enough to coat the strand well without overpowering it.
Angel hair is delicate and requires a much lighter sauce.
A light sauce (low oil, like a tomato basil, marinara etc) will cling better to a pasta with a bit of ridge to it... rigate style...
Heavy meat containing sauce will do better with something like a shell, curl, or twist... or a really thick full spaghetti, but the curls and twists and shells will hold the meat chunks.
Tube pastas are good for baking, with or without filling...
Trying to use one pasta for everything would be like trying to use one knife for all kitchen tasks. Of course... some folks do that too - lol

that is retarded but hey!, pasta does look nice in different shapes and sometimes certain kind of pasta looks better with certain sauce. Still I think it is retarded, pasta is pasta no matter the shape.
That is why I can't get over the fact that a pizza costs 15 dlls when you can get bread, cheese and your favorite topping bake it and it will be the same food cheaper and it will last longer!, try to tell that to my hubby.... pizza is somehow "different".

There is a reason to all of that. The different pasta's taste different
they are not all alike and the shapes hold different sauces better
than others. I am part Italian and we had different pasta's .
I love them all.

Yes, shape matters! Fettucine or spiral for white sauces. Cappellini (angel hair) tastes better to me than spaghetti with red.

It doesn't matter to me what shape pasta is. It obviously matters to your husband's family, so let them be. It's not as though it is an earth stopping issue.
