first make sure the ear ring is sterling silver or gold. otherwise, your new piercing might get infected.
you should keep the earring in for at least 2-3 month. depends on how fast you heal. during this period, do not try to take the earring out, otherwise, you will have a hard time putting it back in. and the hole might close.
also during this time, you should clean the pierced ear daily with an antibiotic liquid. something they should gave you after you pierced your ear. if not, get a bottle at Clarir's.

Scubagirl has the right answer, additionally to using a disinfecting liquid you should turn it clockwise every time you cleanse the piercing to avoid the earring from sticking to the skin, this worked really well for me :)

Use only post ear-rings until the hole has completely scared. (about 6 weeks. After that you should make sure the ring does not elongate the hole when worn to avoid tearing.

Not 100% sure but I think 6 weeks, and it shouldn't be a cheap one either...gold preferably, or at least sterling silver.

keep it in for about 4-8 weeks initially without taking it out at all. then you can switch it out. still, you should keep wearing them for six months to ensure a good permanent hole.
