That's a good question.
I think this will vary depnding on that person and how much money s/he's got.

5000 yen is equivalent to US $40.
At least for me.
You can have a good meal with good service and enough drinks to get drunk at that price and when I was still a student in japan that was the basic price for a night out.

Now if you start going clubbing or eat at one place and drink at another then the price will start changing again.
The above rate is to go to one place on one evening and staying there for a few hours and getting enough drinks to get you drunk and getting enough food to get you filled.

But all this will depend on where you go and where the location is.
Ginza / Roppongi / Daikanyama area are a bit more pricier than say Shinjuku or Shibuya unless you know the cheap places.
For example drinking at Tsubohachi (a rowdy cheap Izakaya restaurant known to be a hang out place for the younger crowd who are not wealthy) will have far less impact on your wallet than drinking at a chic restaurant/bar where 20s and 30 somethings hang out.

Oh right and like the others have said, you cannot use US$ in Japan. In case you were wondering....

The yen symbols (? & ? )are used as follows: ????? , ?????. same quantity of money, the "greenback" image is purely in distinctive spots and that they can't be used on an identical time and regularly are not seen swapped from the region shown interior the example I gave. i think extra across the international known is the ? image. i've got basically seen US distant places money used on the airport, US defense force bases, in all likelihood the U. S. embassy. surely any governmental section in Japan coping with u . s .. in spite of the reality that i will no longer be able to talk for areas consisting of Okinawa, which would be sure circumstances in view that a great form of the land has defense force bases placed there. Yen is the actual and criminal distant places income Japan.

I live in California. When I lived in Japan, I never noticed the price of things being exhorbatantly inflated. It's 120en for a soda in a machine, which is about $1.

A decent meal at a decent restaurant will be round $10 to 15 (for 1). A drink at a club (when I was there) might run about $8 (maybe <1000en). So, maybe a good way to think is a night of partying in Tokyo is going to cost about the same as a night partying in San Francisco, while a night partying in a small Japanese city is going to be like a night partying in a small US city.

If you are heading that way, have a great time!

The exchange rate is 121yen = $1.00, but when you actually exchange it at the bank, they charge you 3 yen per dollar handling fee, so actually get only 118yen =$1.00. Then, if you exchange the money at the airport when you first arrive in Japan, they will take you for even more, sometimes up to a 5yen fee per dollar.

In social terms, $1.00 is like $.25. What I mean, for example, arcade games in the US cost $.25 (at least that's what they cost when I was in the US) here, they are 100yen. Regular candy bars that were 25-35cents in the US, are more than triple in Japan. So I adopted the 100yen=25cents mentality for everyday shopping.

Hope that helps.

Japan is not like Mexico. You cannot use the US dollar anywhere. You must use yen. Currently $1=121 yen.

Here's your first mistake in thinking not exchanging dollars for yen: Japan =/= Mexico.

Ok.....let me say this........
Japan is one of the most expensive counties in the world so one US dollar isnt going to get you much of anything at all.
Plan on at least $200 a day at a minimum.....even then you will have to watch what you spend and do things on the cheap.
