An open-top box is to be constructed from a 4 foot by 6 foot rectangular cardboard by cutting out equal squares at each corner and the folding up the flaps. Let x denote the length of each side of the square to be cut out.
Find the function V that represents the volume of the box in terms of x.

Height= x
Length= 6-2x
Width= 4-2x

Volume
= (Length)(Width)(Height)
= (6-2x)(4-2x)(x)
= (6-2x)(4x-2x^2)
= 24x-12x^2-8x^2+4x^3
= 4x^3 - 20x^2 + 24

The length will be 6 - 2x
The width will be 4-2x, and
The height will be x
So V = (6-2x)(4-2x)x
v = 4x^3 -20x^2 +24x
