as mentioned above the way of measuring time was decided long time ago How and why it was as it is I dont know but we all started using the same time only very recently. The reason for the standardisation of the clocks was the introduction of the railway. (1823) This was because of the need for a timetable and to stop trains hitting each other. Before this clocks were at different times all over the country
The invention of a reliable clock was the next step

I should imagine prehistoric man went by the sun, moon, seasons and stars to ascertain what divisions to give the passage of time. 365 days a year, 12 hours a day, 60 mins an hour and 60 secs a minute were worked out by the ancient Babylonians and Sumerians, just where Iraq and Iran are today. They also invented alcohol, crucifiction and medicine, so we are indebted to them.
But I digress. It has been said that time is something that stops everything happening at once. I hope this helps.

I would imagine in earlier times, before the invention of the clock. that the human race as well as others looked to nature and the sky, as well as self knowledge to keep us on time so to speak, if we were hungry we ate, if food was available, thus the birth of tomorrow, if we were tired, we rested, mainly at night , perhaps because it was easier to see in light,Almost every thing we do is done in order for us to live we have to look after our bodily needs
