I also got told I should get a wireless modem. Would that give a better connection?

I'm partial to linksys - they are now owned by Cisco, the #1 maker of network equipment in the world.

I have set up linksys, netgear, and 3-com equipment. I have really had very little major problems with any of them, although netgear seems to be a tad more problematic. Not that linksys ain't had their issues too.

suggestion: stay away from anything toshiba.

My suggestion is get the Linksys WRK54G or WRK54T, the G has minor problems here and there like most routers do. My highest recommendation goes to DLINK routers, I have been using DLINK routers for about 4 years (both wired and wirlessly) without a single problem, so purchase the DLINK DI-604, its the #1 wireless (also can be used wired at the same time) router with the least problems to ever occur.

have a look at the Belkin wireless G. it has tremendous range. netgear is also a good router, but with a little less range.
