I'm just wondering, because there's a co-worker where i work, and she's always gone because of medical reasons. They always have to ask everyone if they can fill in for her.

One time she was gone for at least 3 weeks- a month.

she does have notes from her doctor. But it seems like its all the time. Her mother will call in and tells us, or her mother will come in to see if she has to work.

Some people have FMLA (family medical leave act) to protect them if they have a chronic illness that can keep them from performing their job. That protects them from having their absences count against them.

EVEN if a person has legitimate medical documents and they are put on medical leave AND they do not return within the time that the medical leave is expired, they can get fired UNLESS they are able to get a special extension, THEN the employer CANNOT FIRE THEM. IF they do not get their leave extended and the doctor says it's okay for them to go back to work then they can get fired for not returning.

Brown Eyed Girl and Just Wondering...maybe we all work together. There is a woman at my office who is ALWAYS gone. It disgusts me because I was really sick once and missed a day and got in trouble, while this woman is always gone and people ask each other if she called in sick and nobody heard anything from her. Or she will call in and say she will be there in an hour and never show up. Even the boss looks for her and when he asks me if I heard from her, I feel like saying "why don't you just fire her or give her a warning like you did me?" She also does not have any projects assigned to her. People always ask, What does she do?" Nothing, she lays in bed all day and gets at least $80k a year.

i think after so many absences the boss might want to see a docotr's excuse. If that isn't provided then I think the co-worker can be fired.

not if she has documentation from a doctor,,,, which if she is gone that much i would imagine she has, most businesses wont let you miss more then a day here and there before they want verification

They can't really fire her for being sick. But if she isn't getting her job done, there are ways they can get rid of her.
