List the Harry Potter books in order of Fav to lest fav. for me.
How effective it was after first read.
1)Azkaban- when i first read it I was sooooo shocked about scabbers.
2) Philosopher's Stone- I was so happy for him when he got the letter and the cake from Hagrid, I cried.
3.) Half Blood Prince- I think we all know why.
4) Goblet of Fire- I cried again at the end.
5) Chamber- This was so exciting. It was also the first Harry potter I read. I read it out of sequence like this. 2,1,3,4. I had a really hard time getting my hands on the third one.
6) Order of the Phoenix- After Goblet I spent so much time trying to work out what would happen that i actually did and i wasn't surprised by anyhting. I felt sour.
Now that I read all at least 2x I think I like it in this order.
Philospher's stone, Half Blood Prince, Azkaban, Goblet of Fire, Chamber, then Order of the phoenix.
The Movies.
Azkaban ( brilliant), Socerer's Stone, Goblet and then Chamber.
What about you?

I'm like a mix of you and aged lion... Like you, my favorites changed after I re-read them and now that 6 book are out, like agedlion... I realize that all the books build and it's really hard to "rank" them. the most profound impact book 6 had on my opinion of the series was changing my perspective on "chamber of secrets" which before 6 I thought was the dud of the series - now I see it's very important (even though I still put it last.)
So... when I first read them:
1. Goblet of Fire - I did read all the books in order and liked them, but I wasn't 'hooked' into the series until reading 'goblet.' I read it a few weeks after it came out, after my neighbor finally finished it and loaned me their copy. I read the book almost without stopping; I HAD to go to sleep, and then I got up and had somewhere to go and I was literally driving through traffic with the book on my lap and trying to read it at traffic lights. (not recommended btw!) I cried when Cedric died.
2. Order of the Phoenix - I know people hate angry adolescent Harry but I loved him. To paraphrase dumbledore, he's often not nearly as angry as he should be. I loved the complexity and the dreaminess of the psychological journey he takes through the corridors of his dreams and in the actual ministry at the end. It also has my favorite line in the whole series - "we thought it was a bog-standard chicken until it started breathing fire." Plus fred and george's brilliant exit... fab.
3. Half-blood prince - there is so much truth to this book it is hard for me to write about. It came out only a few weeks after my beloved grandma passed away at 90 with me by her side. The parallels between her death and dumbledores (as well as mine and harry's responses) were so strong I could barely breathe for crying as I read the book. (I mean emotional parallels - my grandma died naturally in the hospital - not violently like dumbledore, thank heavens.)
4. Prisoner of Azkaban - I love this book so much, I don't even know why I put it fourth. I guess the other books just drew me in more deeply. I think POA is the best-written book - start to finish - in the series.
5. Sorcerer/Philosopher's Stone - reiterating for the confused that Philosopher's stone is the British title and Sorcerer is the american title!
6. chamber of secrets - like I said I didn't love the book - I thought the ending was dumb - but now that book 6 is out the book turned out to be more relevant than I realized!
after re-reads I'd have to say with the build in the series you can't really judge favorites. However I CAN rank order of re-reads:
1. Order of the Phoenix (just has the most "parts" I love)
2. Prisoner of Azkaban
3. Half-blood Prince
4. Sorcerer's Stone
5. Goblet of Fire
6. Chamber of Secrets
and the movies:
1. Prisoner of Azkaban - genius. I love cuaron and I think he really "gets" the series. Plus suddenly all the kids can act.
2. Goblet of Fire. the Yule ball sequence - wonderful.
the other two aren't in the same league, they are very pedestrian. Sorcerer's stone is a little better than chamber.

Chamber of secrets was the best,
Half-Blood prince, the second best,
and Prisoner of Azkaban tying with Goblet for third...
I'm not even going to rate the first, everyone likes the Philosopher's Stone..
Order of the Pheonix is last, because the name was actually cooler sounding than what happened, though it is still excellent--they all are great.
Movies? The first and second were awesome, the third wasn't
quite what i had expected, and the fourth was absolutely
horrible to someone expecting more than just a special
effects show.

1. Azkaban. I love sirius black and I was so happy that he found harry and harry believed him,
2. Goblet of fire. I liked the other schools all comming together to do the tournament and even though I was sad that diggery died.
3. Order of the Phoenix. I liked this one a lot becasue you found out about the prophosey but I was so devistated when sirius died.
4. Half blood prince. Good good book. I honestly think that Snape is a peice of poo and that he shouldn't have killed dumbledore and I was ticked off about it but it was full of key information that made me think.
5. The sorceres stone. It was so cute. Harry finding out he was a wizard and meeting hagrid and hermiones vute frizzy hair.
6. The chamber of secrets. I hate snakes and lockhart annoyed me a lot. I still liked it though becasue Ginny was introduced.
I love all the books a lot and I know I am going to love the next book too!

Prisoner of Azkaban (I was shocked too! This is the book where the story really picks up in my opinion)
Goblet of Fire (I always cry when Cedric dies and after when they're all in the infirmary)
Half Blood Prince (I both hate and love this one, I love Harry's character. How much he's grown and accepted. I hate this one because Dumbledore dies, I threw my book across the room when I first read that part)
Philosophers Stone (The nostalgia of it, the first book I had ever read that I couldn't put down. I was 13 years old)
Chamber of Secrets (Not my favorite, but I haven't read it in forever so I think I will)
Order of the Phoenix (I don't really like this one mainly because Harry is so whiny and angry and Cho annoyed me and Umbridge annoyed me...it just annoyed me. But, I loved the D.A. )
I've reread this series so many times I've lost count! My favorite books of all time!

i'd say prisoner of azkaban is the best because it keeps you in suspense till the end, and the chamber of secrets - the worst because there's completely no surprise, we know(or can guess) all about the basilisk almost at the beginning. it was a big disappointment for me, especially that i loved sorcerer's stone so much. now i rather don't care about these books but i still read them as they come out:) they kind of grow with me, when the first was published i was 8 or 9 and then as i grew up harry did, too, so he's always about my age:)
as for the other books, i can't really decide on the order... but it could be: 3,1,6,5,4,2
